IT Consulting: Vendorless Consulting, What is Best for the Client
Ask a consultant what they believe to be the best product for their client, and the odds are your going to see that brand name clued to the consultants’ car, or on a plaque in the consultants’ office.
Is having a consultant who is tied to one product in your companies best interest? Many consultants choose a vendor simply because they have the best ‘incentives.’ If your paying the consultant to make the best IT decision for you is it wise to let that decision be swayed by the fact that this vendor pays more than that?
The best consultants are the ones who remain free from vendor relations who force them to sell certain amounts of products in order to get certain discounts and bonuses. A company pays a consultant not to sell products, but to help choose the best solution to meet the company’s needs.
Often times consultants who are beholding to vendors will attempt to sell one size fits all solutions. The customer often ends up paying for options, hardware, software, and setup which they will never need or use. Sometimes consultants will propose solutions that were never designed to solve the problem. The consultant may attempt to shoe horn a vendors solution into the customers problem.
A vendorless consultant is free to propose any and all solutions, often offering multiple options. This allows the customer to see the pro’s and con’s to each solution and choose the best for their particular circumstance. The consultant is able to truly consult with the client and help them solve their problems as opposed to selling a product.
Truly a vendorless consultant is able to pick what’s best for the client.
